The smokehouse on Lake to Lake Rd. just west of Sen-3 Benedict is overgrown by brush. It is not only difficult to photograph, it is also difficult to see, and experience has shown that one can walk past it and not know of its presence. The stone appears to be on rows, but some areas are exceptions to this. Roudabush Survey page 89
Editor's Note 190824: The status and exact location of this structure is unknown. The property owners James Arthur, Frances A Edwards, assumed to be children of William Arthur, who originally purchased the land on 5/01/1968, sold the property as four separate, contiguous plots as follows, street numbered west to east on Lake To Lake Rd. with owners to the present named:
2227 - 02/01/1998 to Johnson > 07/05/2000 to Roat
2217 - 02/01/1998 to Shoemaker > 11/02/2011 to Trottier
2207 - 01/26/1999 to Lee > 04/28/2015 to Karlsen
2187 - 04/01/1994 to Allen.
A number of years have passed and the landscaping likely has changed dramatically. The Google Maps street view is from Sep 2007 and of very poor quality throughout this area. The existing Roudabush Survey photographs do not provide enough detail for satellite view analysis, and there is enough vegetation to possible hide this smokehouse if it still exists from either street or satellite view. The first three plots had residences built on them during the year of the first sale. The fourth plot and surrounding land are all agricultural. An on-site visit would be required to verify status.
This smoke house, built in 1841 was rescued from destruction by Leigh Rehner Jones who owns and resides in the cobblestone house at 3301 Algerine Road, Town of Hopewell, Ontario County. It's in back of the house. It was brought over piece by piece from its original site on Lake To Lake Road in the Town of Seneca. The work was done by Ross Marshall, a stone mason, in 2001.
